The process of an Autism Spectrum Disorder assessment is complicated. One assessment is enough to get NDIS funding and a Carer’s Allowance. Two assessments are required for the government schools to gain extra funding and registration with Autism SA.
Some teachers have mistaken children with the following as signs of having ASD: bullying, depression, ADHD, language difficulties. For older children, Dr Lee can provide an opinion if an ASD assessment is worthwhile.
Autism SA require two assessors of different backgrounds. So one from each of:
- A speech pathologist, registered with Autism SA
- A psychologist registered with Autism SA
- A doctor (paediatrician or child psychiatrist) registered with Autism SA.
New criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder was introduced in May 2013. This makes it more difficult to assess children under the age of 3 years.
Dr Lee is accredited with Autism SA for Autism Spectrum Disorder assessments. She primarily assesses children 3-7 years of age.
Her role is not to review assessments where the child has already had someone else assess the child as NOT having ASD. This role is best served by the Child Development Units and Autism SA.
As our practice is aimed at struggling families, we refer on to the Child Development Units primarily for second opinions. If your plan is to have a second opinion by a private speech pathologist or psychologist, we may not be the ideal practice for you. Please discuss this with our reception staff.
Please discuss this with our reception staff if there are any questions before booking an appointment.
